A VIN is a starting point for identity. The right labels and manufacturer guide provide the ratings.
The tire/loading label lists a maximum combined occupants-and-cargo weight. The vehicle certification label gives GVWR and axle ratings. Read your own labels, because options and accessories can make a similar-looking vehicle different.
Find the model-year towing guide or owner’s manual and match the engine, drivetrain, cab, wheelbase, axle ratio and required tow package. If the configuration cannot be confirmed, leave the rating blank and verify it with the manufacturer.
Confirm both trailer and vertical-load limits for the equipment actually installed. Check the permitted weight-carrying or weight-distribution configuration and all component limits. A decoder identifying year, make and model does not verify these ratings.
