Your truck has two different jobs: pull the trailer and carry its downward hitch load.
Towing capacity is a trailer-weight limit for a specific configuration and stated manufacturer conditions. Confirm the correct engine, cab, axle ratio, drivetrain and required equipment. A model’s advertised maximum is not the rating for every truck.
Payload covers the driver, every passenger, truck cargo, added accessories and tongue or pin load. Start with the occupants-and-cargo limit on your own door label. Subtract each item once. A trailer can fit the towing number while exceeding payload.
In Load Lab, enter the label’s payload and adjust the total weight of people, truck cargo and added hitch hardware. The remaining budget must still accommodate the actual loaded hitch load. Missing trailer measurements mean more information is needed, even when the towing number looks generous.
